A relay financial non us resident account may be possible if your business is a US-registered entity with an EIN and none of the owners holds citizenship or residency in one of Relay’s restricted countries. Relay is a financial technology company, not a bank. Its banking services are provided by Thread Bank, Member FDIC.
This guide explains who can open a relay financial non us resident account, which countries are excluded, and which documents and address rules apply.
Relay Financial Non US Resident Account: Quick Answer
| Question | Answer based on Relay’s official pages |
|---|---|
| Can a non-US citizen own a Relay-banked business? | In most cases yes, if the business is US-registered and has an operating presence in the US |
| Is a US-registered entity required? | Yes. Relay serves US-registered entities with an EIN |
| Which ID is accepted from non-US citizens? | Passport only. National ID cards are not accepted |
| Is any country excluded? | Yes. Owners with citizenship or residency in 31 listed countries cannot open an account, with case-by-case exceptions |
| Are virtual mailboxes accepted as personal addresses? | No |
| Is approval guaranteed? | No. Eligibility is confirmed during onboarding and underwriting |
In short, a relay financial non us resident account depends on three things: a US-registered entity with an EIN, owners from non-restricted countries, and valid passport-based verification.
Who Can Open a Relay Financial Non US Resident Account? Check Your Country First
Relay’s Prohibited Countries page says it cannot open an account for any owner, including beneficial owners, who holds citizenship or residency in these countries:
Afghanistan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Burma (Myanmar), Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Nicaragua, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe.
Three points matter here:
- The restriction applies to citizenship or residency, so holding a passport from a listed country can be enough to trigger it, even if you live elsewhere.
- It applies to every named owner, regardless of where the LLC was formed.
- Relay says Thread Bank may review exceptions case by case, and that you should contact Relay’s Customer Experience team before applying. Relay describes the list as based on Thread Bank policy and US sanctions, and says it can change.
Pakistani founders: based on the current official list, a Pakistani citizen or resident is in a restricted category. Do not pay for formation or address services on the assumption that Relay will open the account. Ask Relay first, and read the alternatives section below.
Check your country before you pay for formation, because a relay financial non us resident account cannot be opened if an owner is from a restricted country.
Relay Financial LLC Bank Account: Core Requirements
The requirements for a relay financial non us resident account apply to every beneficial owner, not just the main founder. Relay’s documents page lists these for every beneficial owner. A beneficial owner is anyone holding 25% or more, directly or indirectly, or anyone with significant management responsibility such as a managing member.
- Government photo ID: driver’s license or passport for US citizens, passport only for non-US citizens
- SSN or passport number
- Physical US address (the page excludes PO boxes and virtual mailboxes)
- Position or title in the business
- Personal mobile number for two-factor authentication, and an email address
Non-US owners also give: the source of the business’s initial income, whether the business is new or established, annual personal income, and the countries where the business operates.
A note on the SSN question. Relay’s pages are not fully consistent. The step-by-step page lists a valid SSN under eligibility, while the updated documents page accepts “SSN or passport number.” Third-party blogs disagree even more. Treat the SSN/ITIN question as unresolved until Relay support confirms it for your situation. We found no official statement that an ITIN is accepted or required.Until Relay confirms this in writing, treat the SSN question as open before you apply for a relay financial non us resident account.
Documents Required for a Relay Financial Non US Resident Account (Checklist)
Use this checklist to prepare your relay financial non us resident account application.
| Document or detail | LLC | Corporation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EIN confirmation (CP 575 or 147c letter) | Required | Required | Upload as PNG, JPG, JPEG or PDF |
| Articles of Organization / Incorporation | Required | Required | Certificate of Formation also named for LLCs |
| Operating Agreement | Signed copy if multi-member | Not listed | Bylaws are optional for corporations |
| US business address and phone | Required | Required | Physical address, no PO box |
| Industry and business description | Required | Required | Prohibited industries are excluded |
| Passport (each beneficial owner) | Required | Required | Original, valid, not expired; all four corners visible; color; no flash or blur |
| Owner emails for 25%+ owners | Required | Required | Each owner is invited during sign-up |
| Proof of address | If requested | If requested | Examples: utility bill, bank statement, lease, insurance statement |
Relay also collects entity type, source of funds, countries of operation, US nexus, expected monthly transaction volume, account purpose and regulated status. Scanned copies, temporary IDs and expired IDs are not accepted.
Relay Financial Virtual Address Rules
Address mistakes are a common reason a relay financial non us resident account application gets delayed. This is where many non-resident applications go wrong. Relay treats three addresses separately:
| Address type | Registered agent address | Virtual mailbox / PO box | Real address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal business address | Allowed, including for non-US residents | Not stated as allowed | Allowed |
| Operating address | Not allowed | Not allowed | Required (home or office, per Relay’s registered-agent page) |
| Owner’s personal address | Not allowed | Not allowed | Real residential address required |
Relay’s registered-agent page says the operating address can be a home address “domestic or international.” The documents page, however, lists a physical US address for beneficial owners. These two statements are not easy to reconcile, so ask Relay support which one applies to a non-US owner before you apply.
Whatever you decide, enter only addresses where you actually live or operate. A false address is a compliance problem, not a workaround.
How to Open a Relay Account With a Foreign Passport: Step by Step
Follow these steps to apply for a relay financial non us resident account with a foreign passport.
- Confirm your country status against the prohibited-countries page. Contact Relay first if you might need an exception.
- Have the entity ready. The LLC or corporation must be US-registered with an EIN.
- Gather documents: formation papers, EIN letter, operating agreement if multi-member, passport photos for each 25%+ owner.
- Sign up at relayfi.com with the email you want tied to the account.
- Confirm eligibility and enter business details: entity type, EIN, owner name, date of birth, address, ID details.
- Add every 25%+ owner. Each one must be invited and complete verification.
- Answer the business profile questions consistently with your documents (source of funds, countries of operation, US nexus).
- Wait for review. Relay’s underwriting team confirms eligibility. We found no official timeline, so we do not quote one.
Relay Bank Application Pending or Rejected: What to Do
If your relay financial non us resident account application is pending, contact Relay’s Customer Experience team and ask what is missing. Relay does not publish a list of rejection reasons in the pages we reviewed, so no one outside Relay can tell you the exact cause. Based on the documented requirements, these are the checkable causes:
- An owner holds citizenship or residency in a restricted country
- Virtual mailbox, registered agent or PO box used as a personal or operating address
- ID problems: national ID card, expired passport, blurry photo, missing corners
- Documents that do not match each other (names, addresses, ownership percentages)
- A prohibited industry: cannabis/CBD, crypto, debt collection, direct marketing and telemarketing, gambling, NFTs, payday lending, prescription drugs
- A business with no US nexus or operating presence
If the application is pending, contact Relay’s Customer Experience team and ask what is missing. If it is rejected, ask whether anything can be corrected and whether an exception review applies. Do not resubmit repeatedly with the same data.
Relay Financial Stripe Integration for Non US Resident
A relay financial non us resident account can be linked to Stripe using account and routing numbers, but Stripe approves your business separately. Relay’s integrations page says you connect Relay to Stripe by entering your Relay account and routing numbers. That covers the bank side only. Stripe decides separately whether your business and owners can open a Stripe account. Check Stripe’s own supported-country and business requirements for the owner’s country before assuming this works.
Relay Financial Review for International Founders
This is a requirements-based assessment, not a hands-on test. We have not opened a Relay account for this article.
What the official pages show: remote application, US-registered entities owned by non-US citizens can be accepted, banking services through Thread Bank (FDIC member, with FDIC pass-through coverage subject to conditions), and integrations with Stripe, PayPal, Wise, QuickBooks and Xero.
Limits: a 31-country restriction list, passport-only ID for non-citizens, strict address rules, prohibited industries, and no guaranteed approval. Fees were not verified for this article. Check Relay’s pricing page.
Mercury Alternative for Non US Residents
If a relay financial non us resident account is not available to you, check these providers directly:
- Wise Business: Wise’s own site says non-US residents can open a Wise Business account, but availability depends on your country and business registration. Verify on Wise’s official pages.
- Mercury: re-check Mercury’s current eligibility on its official site, or read our complete Mercury Bank reapplication guide if your account was previously denied.
- Other options: check Airwallex, Payoneer and similar providers’ official country lists.
Remember that forming an LLC does not oblige any bank or payment processor to accept you.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing a provider or attempting a Mercury bank account reapplication before checking the owner’s citizenship and residency against its country list
- Using a virtual mailbox as a home address
- Relying on blog posts that say “no SSN needed” without checking the current Relay pages
- Registering in a prohibited industry category
- Assuming an approved bank account means Stripe will also approve you
A relay financial non us resident account can work for eligible founders with a US entity, but eligibility depends on your country, documents and Relay’s review. Verify current requirements with Relay before applying.
